About DJ Daz

Born in Derby and living in Castle Donington, I have been a musician and music fan all of my life, playing drums, keyboards, bass and a tiny bit of guitar starting around the age of 15.

I studied music production at Wilmorton College when I was 17.  Back then the recording studio consisted of reel to reel tape recorders, a mixing desk and a million cables!

I found a real love for recording music and from that time onwards have spent much of my time and money buying and selling equipment along with learning instruments and playing in a number of bands around the Midlands.

The Drums became my main instrument and I played in bands for many years up until my daughter was born in 2010.  I also had a full recording studio for a number of years where I made demos for local bands and had many a late jam night with my friends.  I still have a pretty impressive production set up at home and continue to make my own music as a hobby along with my recent musician friends.  We've even had a couple of plays on the radio as recent as 2024!

My childhood best friend, Dave K, had always been a DJ and we did many gigs together when he DJ's alongside my bands.  Dave was a well known DJ at Rollerworld.  He had a residency at Rolls Royce Pavillion for many years and often played in Derby clubs during the 90s before he retired for a while.

I began DJing myself around 2004 while still drumming and holding down a full job with the airline bmi.

During this period I spent alot of time in the south of Leicester where I played in a rock band called "Escher" and a soul band called "Green Room".

I eventualy started my own band in Derby called "The Shore" and began DJing around the Derby area too.

I started to work regularly at the Hallmark Hotel (formerly The Midland Hotel opposite Derby train station) and did my first Christmas Season there in 2008.

In 2009 I coaxed Dave out of retirement to work with me for a Christmas season at The Hallmark Hotel.  We had an absolute blast that year and from there we decided that it was much more fun to work together.

We became "The Daz and Dave Disco" and spent the next 6 years living the dream while pretending to be Ant & Dec!

In 2010 we were head-hunted by The Derby Conference Centre so we jumped ship to work at their amazing art-deco building, playing the majority of the weddings and corporate events there along with a busy Christmas season each year.  We enjoyed 5 years of amazing gigs and tremendous fun until Dave decided to retire again and concentrate on his electrical business.

I decided that I still wanted to carry on as a DJ so in 2015 I became a full-time professional "DJ Daz" and started to build my business in earnest.

It was all going quite well until the Covid 19 Pandemic totally stopped me in my tracks and forced a halt in any work and progress as, of course, the dance floor was the last place to re-open to the masses.

I survived 2 years with no work but I was proud to honour pretty much every booking in my diary.  I worked with my customers to reschedule their events and celebrations and eventually we managed to enjoy them all.

During the Covid downtime I worked on my equipment and my music library, updating almost everything and learning how to use the new gear.  I then went on to undertake further DJ Training Courses as well as enjoying lots of available time for my own creative side as a musician and producer.

Since then things have slowly recovered and now I'm pleased to say that the future is looking better than ever!

I'm pretty proud to boast that I run my little business entirely on my own and enjoy all of the aspects of being self employed in a job that I adore.  I build my own DJ Rigs, edit my music, program my lighting, build my own web site and take care of all my own accounts, tax returns and admin.

I haven't spent a penny on advertising for 3 years and my diary is nice and healthy with bookings for up to 2 years ahead.... and without me having to work every single weekend too!

I feel so lucky every day to be enjoying a "life/work" balance.  It never really feels like work when I play with speakers and lights and play music at parties.

I'm definitely hoping for a few more years of good health and to still be playing the tunes well into my 80s!

Hopefully you are still awake after all of that rambling and you can enjoy some my my personal photos and a behind the scenes look at DJ Daz.  I will get some of my music production linked here and a bunch of videos too.

Thanks for your interest and for taking a look at my website.

Party On!!
